THREE CENTURIES OF A FAMILY WITH THE SEA IN ITS BLOOD

A strong maritime thread links nine generations of the Andersons, from their days in the North Yorkshire fishing village of Filey to later years in North Shields - another fishing port - at the mouth of the river Tyne in the heart of the distinctive area of Britain known as Geordieland. This fine picture of the harbour mouth by Dennis Anderson looks out from North Shields through the piers to the North Sea beyond. There have been shipwrights and boatbuilders among the Andersons, they have owned a fleet of steam tugs, witnessed the launch of the legendary Cunard liner Mauretania, gone to sea in the King and Cairn Lines, and have written the definitive history of the White Star Line, owners of the ill-fated Titanic. Current research has traced the family back to the reign of King George II in 1728, almost to the days of Oliver Cromwell, and is continuing apace.
